Yes! My thoughts exactly! I was initiated to meditation by reading Waking Up by Sam Harris. The book is superb! Yet, since I started meditating without a phone, when the eponymous app came out I couldn’t force myself to use it. A focus on the breath is enough; someone else’s voice in my ears is a distraction I do not need; even when the words uttered are as clear and clever as Harris’s.
In my experience, it’s better to meditate in the morning before checking your phone at all. My little digital timer became an invaluable tool for that.
