For people who cannot run for a long time, I would recommend running up and down hills/stairs. You start getting the benefits faster because you're not letting your body settle into a steady pace.
Funny enough, once you get on flat ground, you're flooded with a feeling of gratitude. After panting on the hills, running on a horizontal surface feels like rest.
